THE FEDERATION BEHIND
INDIA'S WRESTLING
MOVEMENT

BWWA is the officially recognized governing body for traditional wrestling in India — uniting akharas, state units, and athletes under one federation, and connecting India’s oldest sport to the global stage.

BWWA operates as a single federation across India’s traditional wrestling disciplines, coordinating state units, certified coaches, and a growing base of registered athletes under one governance structure.

BWWA exists to give India’s traditional wrestling styles — from Belt Wrestling to Pahlavani — a single, accountable home: one federation, one set of standards, one path to international recognition.

What began as a scattered network of akharas and regional wrestling bodies has, over the past decade, consolidated into a structured national federation — one built to preserve heritage on one hand, and meet modern sporting governance standards on the other.

OUR VISION & MISSION

BWWA’s mandate is to protect India’s traditional wrestling disciplines while building the modern infrastructure — governance, coaching, competition, and international affiliation — needed to carry them forward.

  • Preserve and standardize — a common rulebook and weight-category structure across every discipline BWWA governs.
  • Build accountable governance — a transparent state-to-national structure, from local akharas to the executive committee.
  • Expand grassroots access — rural youth, women’s participation, and school and college akhada programs.
  • Support international recognition — advancing India’s traditional disciplines through BWWA’s JJIF affiliation pathway.
